An Uber driver has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a 23-year-old female passenger in East Hartford, Connecticut. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on a Saturday, when the woman—who lives nearby—entered an Uber vehicle. Just 30 seconds into the ride, she alleges the driver, Isaac Boafo, pulled into the parking lot of Margarita’s Restaurant and attacked her inside the car, Eyewitness News 3 WFSB reported.
According to East Hartford police, Boafo jumped over the seat, climbed on top of the victim, and forcibly assaulted her. The woman fought back, punching him multiple times before managing to escape the vehicle. Boafo reportedly fled the scene in his car, while the victim remained nearby and requested another Uber ride. The second driver encouraged her to call 911, which she did.
Police began investigating immediately and were able to identify the suspect using the photo and details provided in the Uber app. Boafo was arrested the following day, and a judge ordered DNA samples to be collected for testing. He faces charges of first-degree sexual assault and disorderly conduct.
In court, Boafo denied the allegations, claiming the passenger was intoxicated and emotionally unstable. Due to the nature of the charges, the court has not released his mugshot and barred media cameras during proceedings.
This case is part of a troubling trend that mirrors what many other survivors have reported nationwide. Uber is currently facing over 1,600 federal sexual assault lawsuits that have been consolidated into a single multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the Northern District of California. Approximately the same number of cases are pending in various state courts, alleging the company failed to take sufficient steps to protect passengers from sexual abuse by drivers.
