Then she saw people she knew coming forward. Little Bear, a member of the Penobscot Nation in Maine, told Sean Scott of The Maine Monitor that seeing other tribal members file sexual abuse claims helped her begin talking about what had happened to her when she was seven years old. Her experience is deeply personal. But it also shows how one survivor's decision to speak can sometimes make it easier for another person to begin telling their own story. Little Bear lived with her family on Indian Island, home of the Penobscot Nation, for about a year during childhood. She told Scott that during that time she was sexually abused by both a Catholic priest and a nun connected with the community. Her family eventually moved away, but the memories followed her. For years, even crossing the bridge onto Indian Island was difficult because St. Ann's Catholic Church stood just beyond it. Seeing the church brought the past back with her. Little Bear kept the abuse largely private for decades. She said one of the people who abused her threatened someone she loved if she spoke about what happened. It wasn't until she saw other Penobscot Nation members coming forward that she began telling relatives about her own experience. The Words That Opened the Door In 2023, four members of the Penobscot Nation filed civil complaints alleging sexual abuse by Catholic priests. Little Bear recognized two of them: her cousin and a childhood friend. She later met her cousin for coffee and thanked him for speaking up for people who had been afraid to do so themselves. His response caught her off guard: “Those of us?” Little Bear then told him that she, too, had been abused. That conversation became a turning point. Her cousin connected her with advocates, and four months later she filed her own civil claim. At that point, even her mother still didn't know what had happened. Little Bear later told her during a therapy session. Her experience shows how survivor disclosure can ripple outward. One person speaking doesn't obligate anyone else to come forward. But it can make someone realize that they aren't alone and that a conversation they once thought impossible may actually be possible. A Story Becomes Part of a Larger Reckoning Little Bear later became one of about 100 survivors of sexual abuse, including roughly 10 members of the Wabanaki Nations, who reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. The agreements were reached in stages beginning in 2025 and continuing into 2026. Some of the claims had been affected by a Maine court ruling involving the state's statute of limitations, but the diocese still agreed to include survivors whose cases had lost legal standing because of that decision. For Little Bear, though, the lawsuit was never primarily about money. She told The Maine Monitor that she wanted acknowledgment and accountability, including public identification of clergy accused of abusing children. A Settlement Doesn't Necessarily Create “Closure” We often talk about lawsuits and settlements as if they bring closure. Little Bear's experience shows why that word can be too simple. She received compensation through the settlement, but she said the legal process didn't end the emotional impact of what happened. In other words, the case was over, but, of course, the memories weren't. The church building remained on Indian Island, and Little Bear continued to wrestle with what its presence represented to her and to other members of the Penobscot Nation. Her experience is also tied to questions of culture, faith and community history. Little Bear has said she would like to see more space for Penobscot spiritual traditions and has questioned the continuing presence of St. Ann's on tribal land. For her, speaking out became about more than resolving a lawsuit, it became part of deciding how she wanted her experience to be understood. One Story Can Make Room for Another Little Bear didn't decide to speak because someone told her it was time. Instead, she spoke after seeing people from her own community tell stories that overlapped with hers. One of them was her cousin and another was her childhood friend.Their decision to come forward didn't force Little Bear to do the same, but it showed her that she wasn't alone. Eventually, that made a conversation possible. Little Bear has since become more willing to speak publicly about her experience and about what accountability means to her. That's one reason survivor stories can matter beyond the person telling them. Someone else may be reading, listening or sitting across a coffee table thinking, “Those of us?”
