Dr. Derrick Todd, a former rheumatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, has been indicted on two counts of rape by a Massachusetts grand jury, Yahoo! News reported. Todd faces accusations of sexually abusing over 200 former patients during more than a decade of practice. The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that Todd’s alleged assaults occurred in December 2022 and June 2023. Further investigations into his conduct remain ongoing.
Allegations of Abuse and Legal Proceedings
The accusations against Todd include performing unnecessary pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, and other unwarranted procedures. Todd pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Friday, during which he was held on $10,000 bail and subjected to strict conditions, including surrendering his passport and medical licenses. He is also prohibited from practicing medicine and contacting any of the victims.
An attorney representing more than 180 of Todd’s accusers through believes this is only the beginning of the criminal case. “Fundamentally, it’s about a doctor abusing his position and taking advantage of patients who put their trust in him for his own personal sexual gratification,” the attorney said. The civil case against Todd is currently in the discovery phase, with Thompson suggesting that the criminal indictment adds weight to these claims.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Response
The lawsuit names several defendants, including Brigham and Women’s Hospital, accusing them of being aware of Todd’s misconduct and failing to act. After receiving anonymous complaints in April 2023, the hospital launched its investigation and fired Todd in July. Shortly afterward, Todd agreed to stop practicing medicine nationwide.
Victims and Advocates Speak Out
Todd’s accusers range from teenagers to women in their 60s. Attorneys for the victims have praised the indictment as a significant step toward justice. “It’s a resounding moment of validation for the patients he sexually assaulted and the brave survivors who came forward with the truth,” said Paula Bliss, a partner with Justice Law Collaborative in Massachusetts.
Ongoing Investigations and Legal Challenges
The criminal case and civil lawsuits against Todd continue to unfold, with additional claims expected to emerge as investigations proceed. Both his legal representatives and former places of employment have refrained from extensive comment, citing the ongoing nature of the cases.
