Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the gaming platform of placing corporate growth and revenue ahead of child safety, AOL reported. The lawsuit alleges that Roblox marketed itself as safe for children while failing to provide adequate safeguards against predators, inappropriate communications, and exploitation risks. According to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office, children as young as 5 have allegedly been able to create accounts without parental permission and communicate with strangers online. The Oklahoma lawsuit is the latest in a growing wave of state level legal action against Roblox. At least 9 state attorneys general have now sued Roblox over child safety concerns, including Louisiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Nebraska, Indiana, and Oklahoma. In addition, Roblox has reached child safety settlements with Nevada, Alabama, and West Virginia, bringing the number of states that have either sued or reached attorney general led settlements with Roblox to at least 12. Oklahoma AG Says Roblox Misled Parents Drummond’s lawsuit alleges that Roblox failed to be honest with parents about the risks children could face on the platform. “Roblox marketed itself as a safe place for children but turned a blind eye as predators targeted and exploited minors on its platform,” Drummond said. “It failed to implement adequate safeguards, failed to protect young users and failed to be honest with parents about the risks. We must ensure Roblox is held accountable and Oklahoma families are protected.” According to the lawsuit, Roblox allegedly allowed an environment where adults could disguise themselves as children and contact minors. The lawsuit also claims the company prioritized user growth and revenue over meaningful child protection measures. “Roblox’s willingness to sacrifice the well-being of children in pursuit of profit is unconscionable and indefensible,” Drummond said. The allegations echo claims made in other state lawsuits, including complaints that Roblox has promoted itself as a safe digital space for children while allegedly failing to prevent grooming, sexual exploitation, exposure to inappropriate content, and contact between minors and adults posing as younger users. Roblox Responds To Oklahoma Lawsuit Roblox responded to the Oklahoma lawsuit by defending its safety systems and disputing the attorney general’s characterization of the platform. “We share Attorney General Drummond’s commitment to child online safety. With that said, we are disappointed that he has filed a lawsuit that both fundamentally misrepresents how Roblox works and fails to take into account the extensive, industry-leading proactive measures the company is taking to set a new standard in online safety. Roblox has built a multilayered safety system that includes pioneering safeguards to help protect our users. We do not allow the exchange of images or videos in chat, and we deploy a combination of advanced AI-powered detection, human moderation and rigorous filters designed to prevent the exchange of personal information. Additionally, we do not encrypt communications, which provides more visibility to help keep our community safe. As part of our ongoing work to strengthen user protections, Roblox recently became the first online gaming platform to require age checks for all users to access chat features so that younger users are limited to chatting only with peers by default. Additionally, this June, we will launch new age-based accounts that automatically place our youngest users in a partitioned environment, further aligning content access and parental controls with a user’s age. When we identify violations of our rules we take swift action and work closely with law enforcement to help hold bad actors accountable. While no system can be perfect, we are constantly strengthening our user protections, and we look forward to working constructively with Attorney General Drummond to help keep kids safe online.” said Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer, Roblox. Roblox Faces Expanding State Scrutiny The Oklahoma lawsuit adds to mounting pressure on Roblox from attorneys general, families, child safety advocates, and lawmakers. Several state lawsuits have raised similar concerns, alleging that Roblox’s design, moderation practices, age verification systems, chat features, and parental controls have not gone far enough to protect children from adults seeking to groom, exploit, or contact minors. Roblox has repeatedly denied that it ignores safety concerns. The company has pointed to AI powered moderation, human review, personal information filters, limits on image and video sharing, age estimation tools, and cooperation with law enforcement. Still, state attorneys general continue to argue that the platform’s public safety messaging has not matched the real world risks children may face while using Roblox. The lawsuits are not only about whether predators used the platform. They also raise a larger consumer protection question: whether parents were given an accurate picture of the risks before allowing their children to use Roblox. A Broader Legal Reckoning For Online Child Safety For parents, the Oklahoma lawsuit is another sign that concerns about Roblox have moved far beyond isolated news stories or private family lawsuits. State attorneys general are increasingly treating online child safety as a consumer protection issue. That means platforms may face legal consequences not only for how their systems operate, but also for how they market those systems to families. The growing number of state actions also shows how quickly Roblox has become a focal point in the national debate over children’s online safety. While the company says it is strengthening safeguards, state officials continue to question whether those changes are enough and whether they came too late for families who say their children were already harmed.
