A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit accusing Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual assault, sex trafficking and forced labor, finding that the claims were filed too late, Hoodline.com reports. Julian Sapp filed the case in February 2025 in the Southern District of New York. He alleged that Combs drugged and sexually assaulted him after the two met in Las Vegas in 2007. U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon ruled that the applicable limitations periods had expired years before Sapp filed suit and that he had not shown the level of diligence required to extend those deadlines. Judge Rejects Effort to Extend Filing Deadlines Sapp argued that alleged threats, Combs’ influence and the circumstances surrounding the alleged encounters prevented him from pursuing legal action sooner. The judge concluded, however, that those circumstances did not establish the continuing diligence necessary to toll, or pause, the statute of limitations for the federal claims. The court determined that the relevant deadlines had expired no later than approximately November 2022. NYC Gender-Motivated Violence Law May Present Separate Issue Although the federal claims were dismissed, the ruling did not necessarily resolve every potential legal theory available to Sapp, a Las Vegas-based entertainer who was working as an adult performer in 2007 and was also pursuing a career in music when he says he first met Combs. The decision noted a possible distinction involving New York City’s Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Law, which created a separate civil cause of action and revival framework for certain older claims involving gender-motivated violence. Whether Sapp could pursue such a claim would depend on factors including the alleged conduct, where it occurred and whether the claim meets the city law’s filing requirements. Different causes of action can carry different statutes of limitations. A claim barred under one legal theory may not automatically be barred under another statute with its own revival provisions.In other words, different types of legal claims can have different filing deadlines. That means missing the deadline for one claim does not always mean every possible claim is too late. Ruling Highlights Importance of Filing Deadlines in Older Abuse Cases The Sapp decision illustrates one of the recurring issues in lawsuits involving allegations from years or decades earlier. Even when multiple legal theories arise from the same alleged conduct, each can have its own filing deadline, revival provision or tolling rule. That has become especially significant in New York, where state and city lawmakers have enacted several measures allowing some previously time-barred sexual abuse claims to move forward. For survivors, the result can be legally complicated: a claim that is too late under one statute may still require a separate analysis under another.
