Apple is facing coordinated federal litigation over allegations that its AirTag tracking devices have been used to stalk, threaten and endanger people, including survivors of domestic violence. On October 2, 2026, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ordered the transfer of 17 lawsuits from 13 federal districts to the Northern District of California. The cases will be overseen by U.S. District Judge Noël Wise as part of In re: Apple AirTag Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 3199). The panel also identified 12 additional related lawsuits that could become part of the proceedings. The decision follows a growing number of complaints alleging that Apple knew its tracking devices could be used by abusive partners and stalkers but failed to implement sufficient safety protections. Oregon Woman Says AirTags Were Used to Find Her at Confidential Shelter One of the recently reported lawsuits involves a woman from Beaverton, Oregon, who says AirTags were used to track her movements while she was living in a confidential domestic violence shelter. According to a September 23 report by Portland television station FOX 12, the woman filed a federal lawsuit against Apple under the pseudonym Jane Doe, alleging negligence and defective product design. The lawsuit describes an incident on October 1, 2024, when the woman heard a beeping sound coming from her child's backpack. Upon investigating, she discovered an AirTag concealed inside the backpack's lining. Despite using an iPhone, she says she had received no automated warning that an unknown tracking device was traveling with her. The complaint also alleges that another AirTag had been placed inside the frame of her vehicle. Security camera footage reportedly captured the father of her two oldest children at the confidential shelter where she was staying, raising concerns that her location had been compromised. The woman alleges that the tracking caused significant emotional distress, disrupted custody arrangements and contributed to her need for medical treatment. She is seeking compensatory and punitive damages from Apple. Lawsuits Allege Apple Knew About AirTag Stalking Risks Introduced in 2021, Apple AirTags are small Bluetooth-enabled devices designed to help people locate misplaced belongings such as keys, luggage and backpacks. The devices rely on Apple's Find My network, which uses nearby compatible Apple devices to relay location information to an AirTag's registered owner. But plaintiffs argue that the same technology can allow someone to monitor another person's movements without their knowledge or consent. The lawsuits allege that domestic violence advocates warned Apple about the potential for abuse before the AirTag's release. They also cite more than 40,000 reported AirTag stalking complaints between April 2021 and April 2024. Although Apple has introduced unwanted-tracking alerts and other safety measures, plaintiffs contend that those protections have been inadequate, particularly when someone is being monitored by an abusive partner. Some lawsuits describe delayed notifications, difficulty locating hidden devices and tracking that continued before victims became aware of the danger. Apple's Response to AirTag Stalking Concerns Apple maintains that AirTags were designed with privacy and safety protections intended to discourage unwanted tracking. In May 2024, the company announced new cross-platform alerts developed with Google to help both iPhone and Android users detect unfamiliar Bluetooth trackers. Apple also introduced a new generation of AirTags in January 2026, emphasizing its safeguards against unwanted tracking. The lawsuits challenge whether these protections have been sufficient to prevent foreseeable harm. Pursuing Apple AirTag Stalking Legal Claims The October 2 consolidation marks an important procedural development for people pursuing legal claims against Apple. Earlier litigation had sought to proceed as a class action, but in March 2026, a federal judge declined to certify the proposed class. Plaintiffs subsequently began pursuing individual lawsuits. The new multidistrict litigation allows federal courts to coordinate evidence gathering, witness testimony and other pretrial matters involving common allegations about Apple's product design and safety practices. The cases will remain individual claims rather than becoming a single class action. The central legal question is whether Apple took reasonable steps to protect consumers from foreseeable misuse of its tracking technology. The litigation also raises broader questions about technology companies' responsibility when products designed for legitimate purposes are used to facilitate stalking and domestic abuse. AirTag Stalking Survivors May Have Legal Options Stalking can cause lasting harm, particularly when it occurs in the context of domestic violence or sexual abuse. People who have been secretly tracked may experience anxiety, fear for their safety, disruption to their employment or family life, and expenses associated with relocation or additional security. Survivors whose experiences involved unwanted AirTag tracking may be able to pursue legal claims depending on the circumstances, the injuries they suffered and applicable state law. Documentation such as photographs of hidden tracking devices, unwanted-tracking notifications, police reports, medical records and related communications may help establish what occurred. Survivors can request a free, confidential case review to learn whether they may have legal options involving Apple or the person responsible for the stalking.
