For Americans living, working, or traveling abroad, violence can leave survivors feeling doubly isolated — not only from loved ones, but from support systems they trust. Pathways to Safety International exists to bridge that gap.
This nonprofit organization provides trauma-informed, culturally sensitive support to U.S. citizens experiencing gender-based violence outside the United States. Whether it’s domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human trafficking, Pathways offers a vital connection to safety, advocacy, and dignity — no matter where in the world a survivor may be.
Services for Americans Overseas
Pathways offers confidential services to individuals of all genders and backgrounds. Their team can assist with:
- Safety planning and crisis intervention
- Legal and medical advocacy, including navigating foreign systems
- Referrals to local shelter, counseling, and legal resources
- Coordination with U.S. embassies and consulates (upon request)
- Emergency relocation and repatriation assistance
- Professional therapy services (virtual or in partnership with local providers)
These services are especially critical in countries where gender-based violence is poorly understood or where survivors fear retaliation, legal consequences, or discrimination for speaking out.
For Civilians, Expats, Students, and Service Members
Survivors served by Pathways include:
- Study abroad and exchange students
- Expats and digital nomads
- Tourists and business travelers
- Missionaries and aid workers
- Military spouses, partners, and dependents
No matter your reason for being abroad, if you’ve experienced violence, Pathways can help you navigate the situation with dignity and clarity.
A Legacy of Survivor Advocacy
Pathways previously operated the SASHAA (Sexual Assault Support & Help for Americans Abroad) program, which ended in 2017 after federal funding cuts. But their commitment to international survivor support continues…
Their mission remains the same: to ensure that no American survivor is left without support, regardless of borders, bureaucracy, or time zones.
