Netflix’s new hit series Wayward has reignited public attention on the abusive troubled teen industry, a multibillion-dollar network of youth programs tied to decades of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. From the roots of Synanon and CEDU to recent cases, the TTI’s legacy continues to haunt survivors demanding accountability.

The troubled teen industry, housing over 120,000 youth annually, faces allegations of abuse, neglect, and inadequate oversight.

A lawsuit was filed against the now-defunct Circle of Hope Girls Ranch and Boarding School in Humansville, MO by the youngest victim to sue the owners and founders, Stephanie and Boyd Householder.

Several Family Help & Wellness programs, including Elevations Youth Treatment Center in Utah, have run afoul of state regulations for failing to notify the state of critical incidents, such as those in which children were injured or allegedly abused, NBC News reported.
