Uber Driver on Trial in Alabama for Alleged Sexual Assaults of Two Women

Uber driver sexual assault lawsuit
Summary: Two women have accused a former Uber driver of assaulting them during rides in Alabama. As the trial unfolds, jurors are presented with dashcam footage, forensic evidence, and testimony that could shape both criminal and civil outcomes.

In Lee County, Alabama, the trial of a former Uber driver accused of sexually assaulting two women during separate rides is underway, Fox8 News reported yesterday.

Theodore Leroy Halls, 48, faces five felony charges, including first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, and first-degree sexual abuse stemming from incidents in 2020 and 2022. Both women were reportedly intoxicated at the time and unable to consent.

Prosecutors presented dashcam footage allegedly recorded by Halls that they say captures the 2022 incident in detail. The video reportedly shows the female passenger in a semi-conscious state, with the driver continuing the ride to a secluded location. According to testimony, Halls later dropped the woman off and she contacted her mother, visited the hospital, and was examined by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. The forensic examination confirmed evidence of sexual contact.

The first woman testified she remembered little from that night after leaving a bar in downtown Auburn. She was reportedly arrested later for public intoxication and only learned she had been missing for about an hour after speaking with her mother and roommate. The other alleged victim, tied to the 2020 case, said she had no memory of an encounter with Halls and only learned about the incident after police contacted her. Prosecutors say dashcam video from Halls’ vehicle confirmed her identity.

Digital forensics investigators testified that Halls had deleted the dashcam video, but authorities were able to recover the files. An Auburn Police investigator also testified that Halls’ internet history included graphic searches involving intoxicated women and rideshare drivers, which prosecutors presented to establish motive and intent.

One of the women has reportedly settled a civil lawsuit with Uber for an undisclosed amount, while the other case remains ongoing. Defense attorneys questioned the victims about their civil claims, suggesting financial motives. Prosecutors objected to the line of questioning, and the trial judge emphasized the need for jurors to remain impartial.

Courtroom measures were taken to maintain the integrity of the proceedings, including banning cameras and restricting media access. Judge Jeffrey Tickal reminded jurors not to conduct outside research or discuss the case.

Halls remains in custody at the Lee County Detention Facility without bond. The trial continues, with jurors expected to view additional dashcam footage and hear further testimony.
