The Trevor Project: Lifesaving Support for LGBTQIA+ Youth in Crisis

The Trevor Project

For many LGBTQIA+ young people, abuse doesn’t always start with physical harm — it starts with silence, shame, or rejection. The Trevor Project exists to make sure no one has to face that alone.

Founded in 1998, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQIA+ people under 25. From 24/7 phone and text lines to identity-affirming peer communities, their programs offer more than support — they offer connection, safety, and hope.

Crisis Support That Meets You Where You Are

Whether someone is navigating abuse at home, being bullied at school, or just trying to survive another day in an unsupportive environment, The Trevor Project is here. Their trained counselors are available 24/7 through:

  • 📞 TrevorLifeline: 1-866-488-7386
  • 💬 TrevorChat: Online real-time support
  • 📱 TrevorText: Text “START” to 678678

All services are free, confidential, and designed to support young people in moments of distress — whether due to abuse, self-harm, suicidal ideation, or identity-based trauma.

The Trevor Project takes its name from the 1994 Academy Award–winning short film Trevor, which told the story of a 13-year-old boy grappling with his sexual identity and thoughts of suicide. When the filmmakers realized there was no national crisis line specifically for LGBTQ youth, they launched The Trevor Project in 1998 to ensure that young people like Trevor would always have someone to talk to — someone who affirms their identity and reminds them they are not alone.

Not Just Crisis — Community

Beyond emergency support, The Trevor Project offers affirming spaces for ongoing connection, including:

  • TrevorSpace: A moderated international peer support community for LGBTQIA+ youth
  • Educational resources for youth, parents, and educators
  • Policy advocacy to protect LGBTQIA+ youth from harmful practices like conversion therapy
  • Research that brings visibility to the lived experiences of queer youth

Their entire framework is trauma-informed and youth-led — grounded in the belief that being heard, believed, and affirmed can be life-saving.

Every Survivor Deserves to Be Seen

For LGBTQIA+ youth who have experienced sexual abuse, domestic violence, or exploitation, The Trevor Project provides judgment-free, culturally competent support — no matter where they are on their journey. Whether you need help today or you’re simply not ready to talk, The Trevor Project will still be here when you are.
