Roblox announced Monday that it will roll out new age-based account restrictions for young users as the gaming platform continues to face lawsuits and criticism over child safety, several media outlets reported, including NBC San Diego.
The California-based company said users ages 5 to 8 will be automatically placed into a “Roblox Kids” account, while users ages 9 to 15 will be assigned to a “Roblox Select” account. The changes are expected to take effect in early June.
Under the new system, users in Roblox Kids accounts will not have access to chat features and will be limited to games labeled with “Minimal or Mild” content maturity ratings that have passed the company’s internal review process. Users in Roblox Select accounts will be able to access games rated up to “Moderate” and will retain limited chat capabilities, with default communication settings remaining in place.
The company said account classifications will be determined through its age verification system or by a verified parent. Users who have not completed age verification will be restricted to lower-rated content and will not be able to access communication features. As users age, they will automatically transition into the next account tier.
Roblox also said it plans to expand parental controls, allowing parents to block specific games and manage chat settings more directly.
Earlier this year, the platform implemented mandatory age verification for users seeking access to chat functions. That process includes a facial scan used to estimate a user’s age and assign appropriate communication settings, including restrictions on who users can interact with.
Since launching in 2006, Roblox has grown to an average of 144.5 million daily active users and more than 35 billion hours of engagement. The platform has also faced a growing number of lawsuits alleging it failed to adequately protect children from online predators.
Last month, Los Angeles County filed a civil lawsuit against Roblox, alleging that the platform markets itself to children while operating what the complaint describes as a largely unsupervised environment where adults can interact with minors with limited oversight.
Roblox disputed those claims in a statement, saying it “will defend against it vigorously.”
“Roblox is built with safety at its core, and we continue to evolve and strengthen our protections every day,” a company spokesperson said. “We have advanced safeguards that monitor our platform for harmful content and communications, and users cannot send or receive images via chat, avoiding one of the most prevalent opportunities for misuse seen elsewhere online.”
The rollout of age-based accounts comes as legal and regulatory scrutiny continues to focus on how online platforms balance user growth with child safety protections.
