A single blog post on The Wartburg Watch, a site run by Christian writer and advocate Dee Parsons, helped bring to light decades-old sexual abuse by Gateway Church founder Robert Preston Morris, culminating in his guilty plea to five counts of lewd acts with a child. Morris, once a respected evangelical leader in Oklahoma, was sentenced to a 10-year suspended term that includes six months in jail.
CBS News reported earlier this month that the post featured Cindy Clemishire, who shared her story publicly for the first time through Parsons’ platform. Clemishire said the support she found through the blog and its readers helped her move from silence to empowerment. The story quickly gained national traction, prompting Morris’ resignation and eventual criminal charges. “Cindy’s courage and the refusal of Oklahoma authorities to ignore her case made this possible,” Parsons said. “We are uncovering centuries of shame.”
Parsons compared the growing exposure of abuse in evangelical circles to the Catholic Church’s decades-long reckoning. She emphasized how abusers often exploit church hierarchies that demand loyalty and trust. “Predators go where they’re respected and unquestioned: schools, youth groups, and especially churches,” she said.
Advocates say Clemishire’s case shows how survivor voices and independent watchdogs like The Wartburg Watch are essential in breaking institutional silence. Dan Powers, CEO of the Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center, noted that most victims never disclose their abuse, making vigilance and education critical. “As a community, we have a duty to support survivors and ensure children are protected,” Powers said.
Parsons urged parents to be proactive in spotting warning signs. “Don’t assume your church is immune,” she said. “Ask questions, stay alert, and never ignore your instincts.”
