A new $150 million lawsuit has been filed against Detroit Medical Center’s Sinai-Grace Hospital, Tenet Healthcare, and VHS of Michigan, adding to growing legal claims against former nurse Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, who is accused of sexually assaulting multiple patients, CBS News reported. The new complaint follows a separate $100 million lawsuit filed last month and comes as more survivors continue to step forward. According to court filings and attorneys representing the alleged victims, the number of survivors could ultimately reach into the hundreds. “The worst thing here is the amount of evidence showing him to have been a known predator,” said a plaintiff’s attorney during a press conference on Tuesday. “We truly believe that the number of survivors could be in the hundreds, and we are encouraging each and every one of them to come forward.” The latest lawsuit was filed on behalf of Trejah Shines, a registered nurse who alleges she was assaulted by Figueroa-Berrios on July 26, 2025, while receiving care at Sinai-Grace. According to the complaint, she underwent an unnecessary medical procedure, was then sedated, and later awoke to find she had been assaulted. A subsequent rape kit reportedly tested positive. “She herself is a nurse, and how the health care system could have this happen to her has been especially devastating for her,” said the attorney. Allegations of Institutional Negligence Court documents and public records suggest that Figueroa-Berrios had a history of misconduct long before his time at Sinai-Grace. He was previously terminated from another hospital following multiple complaints of sexual misconduct, arrested for assault in 2019, and allegedly posted inappropriate, sexually suggestive content on social media. Attorneys representing the survivors argue that Sinai-Grace and its parent companies failed to adequately vet or monitor Figueroa-Berrios despite his record. “We think that the evidence that they knew or, at a minimum, should have known and prevented, we think it's going to be absolutely insurmountable for Sinai Grace,” said the attorney. Multiple lawsuits have now been filed, and attorneys say more victims are expected to join in the coming weeks. Another lawsuit on behalf of a separate survivor is scheduled to be filed soon.
