Three additional women have filed lawsuits against former Rochester Hills physician Dr. Oumair Aejaz, accusing him of sexually assaulting and secretly recording patients at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital.
Aejaz, who worked at several medical facilities and a swim club, already faces multiple felony charges for sexual abuse and for possessing thousands of illicit images and videos. Earlier this month, he pleaded no contest to 31 counts of sexual misconduct in two separate criminal cases.
According to CBS News Detroit, these new lawsuits were filed because the women felt their rights were not adequately represented through an existing class action. A plaintiff’s attorney stated that the women are pursuing individual claims to hold all responsible parties accountable.
Investigators reportedly discovered more than 15,000 videos in Aejaz’s possession. Authorities say the secret footage showed patients naked and exposed, along with instances in which Aejaz allegedly touched victims inappropriately during medical encounters.
Attorneys for the women claim Henry Ford Macomb Hospital ignored prior complaints about Aejaz and failed to enforce basic patient safety procedures. One attorney told CBS News Detroit that Aejaz treated patients who were not assigned to him and that warning signs were repeatedly missed. They questioned what policies allowed such misconduct to continue for years.
Attorneys are urging additional survivors to come forward, noting that there may be many more people harmed.
