A new federal lawsuit claims that Roblox, one of the world’s most widely used online gaming platforms, failed to prevent a predator from exploiting a 10-year-old girl from Johnson County, IN. The filing was made in the Northern District of California, where Roblox is headquartered.
According to investigators, Roblox users can create an unlimited number of virtual experiences that others can join. Some of these user generated environments featured names referencing convicted offenders, including rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was convicted earlier this year on sexual crimes, and Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of orchestrating a trafficking ring involving underage girls. Investigators say accounts creating these virtual spaces were allowed to openly operate in areas of the platform meant for children.
These examples emerged in the lawsuit filed on behalf of the now 11-year-old plaintiff. A plaintiff’s attorney representing the family told 13News WTHR, “This is one of probably 800 to 900 similarly situated children that we represent. I hate to do an analogy like this, but for pedophiles, word got out that Roblox was the good fishing ground, so they all flocked to this platform.”
Court documents state that the girl had used Roblox for years. Her father believed the platform’s safety tools were sufficiently protective. In 2024, investigators say the girl encountered a man she met through Roblox. The man allegedly groomed her over time, gained her trust, and persuaded her to exchange cellphone numbers with him. Investigators say he later coerced the child on a video chat to undress and engage in sexual acts, which he recorded.
A plaintiff’s attorney said, “This isn’t like old days. Once this is out there, this photo never comes back. (The photos are) in Russia, it’s in China. It’s being sold to people as child pornography, which is what it is.”
The suit is one of many currently asserting that Roblox enabled predators to contact and abuse children. Roblox’s founder and CEO David Baszucki disputed some of the negative portrayals circulating about the platform. He told CNN, “I want to highlight much of what you hear about is not happening on Roblox, and many parents aren’t aware that many other apps that kids have access to allow image sharing, allowed texting.”
Baszucki said Roblox has long invested in child safety features. “Every day, over 150 million people come to Roblox, and they have amazing experiences. They learn, they communicate with their friends, they get interested in STEM. And it’s an enormous responsibility for us at Roblox. It’s why we built safety into the platform.”
This week Roblox introduced a new voluntary age verification process for users who want access to chat functions. Users must either upload a government ID or allow artificial intelligence to estimate their age with a face scan. Roblox says the verification requirement will become mandatory in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands in December and is scheduled to expand globally in early 2026.
A plaintiff’s attorney involved in the case warned parents not to focus solely on one platform. “Use Roblox and what you learn from looking at this stuff in this litigation to educate you about what might be going on on other platforms.”
In December a federal judicial panel is expected to decide whether this case should be grouped with nearly two dozen similar lawsuits, which would determine if they proceed together as a single class action. Attorneys General from at least four U.S. states have either filed lawsuits against Roblox or launched investigations.
