A former Denver Lyft driver, who preyed on intoxicated women by posing as their assigned ride, has been sentenced to between 290 years and life in prison.
Matthew Isaac Pastor-Mendoza will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars following a Denver District Court sentencing by Judge Karen Brody. Judge Brody handed Pastor-Mendoza a sentence of between 290 years and life in prison for targeting, sexually assaulting, and robbing female passengers.
Pastor-Mendoza targeted vulnerable women before sexually assaulting them and, in some cases, stealing personal items such as underwear and cellphones.
Judge Brody described the lengthy sentence as “entirely appropriate,” according to Denver prosecutors. Authorities stated that the driver specifically targeted intoxicated passengers who mistakenly entered his vehicle, believing he was their Lyft driver.
In addition to assaulting the women, he reportedly stole personal belongings like underwear and phones. Denver District Court Judge Karen Brody emphasized the severity of the crimes during sentencing, underscoring the necessity of protecting the community from further harm.
Denver District Attorney’s office applauded Judge Brody’s sentence, with representatives stating it was “entirely appropriate” given the predatory nature of the offenses. “Judge Brody’s severe sentence is entirely appropriate,” said the prosecution. “This ensures he will never again threaten our community.” The sentencing highlights ongoing safety concerns related to rideshare services, prompting calls for increased vigilance from both passengers and providers to prevent similar crimes in the future.
