Roblox Investigated By Georgia Attorney General Over Child Safety Concerns

Summary: Millions of children log on daily to socialize and play in virtual worlds, but recent investigations and criminal cases highlight growing concerns about how safe those spaces really are. Georgia’s inquiry into Roblox signals a deeper look at whether platform safeguards, moderation systems, and parental controls are keeping pace with the risks young users face online.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has opened an investigation into Roblox, the widely used online gaming and chat platform, to examine whether the company’s practices comply with Georgia’s consumer protection laws and whether young users are being adequately protected, CBS News Atlanta reported today.

The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the inquiry follows repeated reports of child abuse and sexual exploitation allegedly connected to interactions on the platform. Officials say the investigation will evaluate Roblox’s safety systems, moderation tools, and representations about its suitability for children.

The probe comes amid several incidents involving minors. Earlier this year, the Georgia State Patrol recovered two girls who had gone missing from their Florida home after communicating with a 19 year old stranger on Roblox. The suspect, who is from Nebraska, is facing kidnapping and other charges.

Authorities have also pointed to prior cases. In 2023, law enforcement reported that an adult posing as a child used Roblox’s chat function to contact a 12 year old boy and later coerced him into sending explicit photos.

Carr addressed the broader concern about online safety, stating, “Predators are using online platforms like Roblox to go after our children, and we’re fighting back. As a father and Attorney General, keeping kids safe will always be my top priority, and any company that exposes them to harm will be held accountable.”

Under Georgia’s Fair Business Practices Act, Carr issued a Civil Investigative Demand requesting documents and information from Roblox. The demand seeks materials related to safety policies, internal reports, and platform controls.

The request includes reports of abuse and safety violations involving Georgia users, documents detailing harm experienced by children on the platform, communications discussing the effectiveness of parental controls, and records concerning chat and game moderation capabilities.

Investigators have also asked for information about age verification procedures, audits or data regarding adult and child interactions, reports of criminal activity linked to the platform, and marketing materials describing Roblox’s appropriateness for younger audiences.

The Roblox investigation is one of several recent efforts by Carr’s office focused on child protection in digital spaces. Earlier this month, prosecutors secured the conviction of a Hart County man accused of trafficking a 16 year old girl after allegedly targeting her through Snapchat and other online applications.

Carr has also joined a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general urging Congress to pass the Senate version of the Kids Online Safety Act. The proposed legislation would require online platforms to implement stronger safeguards for users under 17.

In addition, Carr has continued defending Georgia’s Protecting Georgia’s Children on Social Media Act of 2024 and has called on companies such as TikTok and Snapchat to strengthen parental control systems.

A Civil Investigative Demand does not establish that wrongdoing has occurred. It allows the Attorney General’s Office to gather information and determine whether state laws have been violated.

Responding to the investigation, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman said, “We share Attorney General Carr’s commitment to helping keep children safe online. As a platform built with a young audience in mind, Roblox has a history of pioneering industry-leading safeguards designed to monitor for harmful content and proactively block the exchange of images and personal information in chat.

Our commitment to safety has no finish line. In early 2026, we completed the global rollout of mandatory Facial Age Estimation, making Roblox the first major platform to require age checks for all users to access chat features. We take swift action when we identify violations of our rules and work closely with law enforcement to hold bad actors accountable. While no system is perfect, we look forward to working with the Attorney General’s office to help keep kids safe online.”
