Former Owensboro, KY Pastor Takes Own Life After Sexual Abuse Charges

Baptist Press, per Biblical Recorder reports that a former worship pastor of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the Owensboro, Kentucky area has died, according to Kentucky State Police.

In a news release, authorities said the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office responded to what was described as the apparent suicide of David Rodgers near his Utica residence.

Rodgers, 40, had been arrested earlier in the week on multiple charges, including third degree rape, second degree sodomy involving a position of authority, first degree sexual abuse, procuring or promoting the use of a minor by electronic means, and possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor.

Police said Rodgers was taken into custody following an investigation that began after a complaint was received in early January 2026. Court records indicated the allegations involved incidents reported to have occurred approximately 10 to 11 years ago.

According to a citation obtained by local media, investigators stated that Rodgers came into contact with the alleged victim through what authorities described as a position of special trust. The citation further noted that Rodgers agreed to be interviewed after being advised of his rights.

Church leadership said it learned of the charges earlier this week. In a public statement, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church said Rodgers was immediately terminated.

“We understand that for sexual assault survivors, this may initiate feelings of pain and past trauma,” the church said. “Please know we are praying for you and your continued healing.”

The church added that it remains committed to the physical, spiritual, and emotional safety of those on its campus, particularly children.

Rodgers had previously been released on bond following his arrest.
