A History of Cover-Ups and Betrayal

Since its founding in 1830, the LDS Church has projected an image of purity and moral leadership. Yet behind closed doors, survivors say sexual abuse was hidden or ignored for decades with many cases involving bishops, missionaries, scout leaders, and other trusted figures.

Church officials quietly reassigned abusers and discouraged police involvement. Reports of sexual abuse within the Church were often funneled through the Church’s “help line,” a system created in the 1990s that routed abuse disclosures to Church attorneys instead of child protection authorities.

More than 1,000 survivors have courageously come forward.

If you’re ready, this could be your moment to take the first step – privately, and on your own terms.

Key Programs Linked to Abuse

Many survivors say the abuse occurred in church-run programs, camps, and youth groups — often far from oversight or accountability.

  • Indian Placement Program – Multiple abuse allegations from Native children placed in LDS homes.
  • Boy Scouts of America – Up to 10,000 sexual abuse claims tied to LDS-sponsored Scout troops.
  • Youth Groups – Grooming and abuse reported in Young Men’s and Young Women’s programs.
  • Church Camps & Missions – Multiple lawsuits. In one case, a bishop allegedly paid to silence a victim’s family.

Survivors Are Fighting Back

Proven Legal Results:

  • Undisclosed Settlement (2025) – The LDS Church has agreed in principle to settle over 100 child sexual abuse lawsuits filed in California, stemming from allegations against bishops, youth leaders, and volunteers. While the financial terms remain confidential, the settlement marks one of the largest coordinated legal actions against the LDS Church to date.

  • $2.3B Jury Verdict (CA; 2023) – Survivor sued her abusive stepfather, a prominent LDS member. The LDS Church settled separately for $1M.

  • $32M Settlement (WV) – The Church paid $27 million in legal fees before reaching a mid-trial settlement in 2018 with survivors of serial child molester Michael Jensen. The Church allowed Jensen to be around children despite warnings he would likely re-offend.

  • $250M BSA Settlement  – The LDS Church offered to contribute $250 million to the BSA’s bankruptcy but a judge shot it down because the Church wanted to use the bankruptcy to avoid broader liability, denying survivors justice.

  • $1.1M Settlement (WA) – In 2023, the LDS Church settled a case over a preschooler abused at an LDS-run facility.

These legal victories show that justice and meaningful compensation are possible. You, too, may be eligible to take action and hold the Church accountable.
